Jody Carper interviews CJ Cash and Cole Bunting after winning the ACTRA Super 7 Roping. The pair picked up over $37,000 in cash and awards.  – Off The Beaten Path Photo

By Mike Sweeney
ACTRA Business Manager

RENO, NV – With almost a million dollars up for grabs at the 2018 ACTRA National Finals held October 21-27, the top winners came from five different ACTRA Chapters. California’s Cole Bunting made the biggest haul with over $24,000 in cash and awards. Right behind him was the Northwest’s CJ Cash, taking home over $20,000 in cash and awards. Coming in third was Hawaii’s Shawn Aguiar, picking up over $16,000 in cash and awards. Idaho/Nevada’s Bailey Corkill took home almost $10,000 in cash and awards. Alan Hall from the Rocky Mountain Chapter rounded out the top five with just over $9,500 in cash and awards. There were 587 checks paid out at the Finals!

New this year was the exciting prizeline for the Super 7 Roping. The champions each  took home a Polaris Sportsman 575, the new Heel-O-Matic Trainer and championship Skyline buckles. ACTRA would like to thank the Messersmith family of California Customs, Josh Love and the Heel-O-Matic family, and Robert Lever from Wrangler for making this new program possible. The total awards payout in this roping was over $50,000. Congratulations to the champs, Cole Bunting and CJ Cash. Another statistic that seems to support the parity between the Chapters is the money won by each Chapter and their participants. For instance, California with 46% of the participants won 43% of the money.  Next it was the Northwest Chapter with 19% of the participants and 19% the money, right behind them was ID-NV Chapter with 21% of the participants winning 18% of the money.  Hawaii held their own with 11% of the money and 6% of the participants, the Rocky Mountain Chapter was next with 9% of the money won and 5% of the participants, followed by the Big Horn Chapter and the Arizona Chapter. Having number parity between the chapters is always a very difficult challenge. In 2018, the ACTRA numbering committees did an outstanding job.
ACTRA has been blessed with many great sponsors/partners through the years and it is awesome that they show up at the National Finals to show their support. A big tip of the Resistol to Robert Lever from Wrangler, Lorinda Markegard representing Professional’s Choice; Ryan and Sophia Fowler from Skyline Silversmiths. The Pro Equine Group COO, Dustin Noblitt; Cactus Ropes, Mike Piland; Fast Back Ropes, Coy Upchurch; Heel-O-Matic’s Josh Love; Cactus Ropes, Gus Rodriguez; Total Feeds Doc Harry Anderson; Kovac Ranch Equipment, Mike and Carrie Kovac; Earl Hall Agri Business, Earl Hall; Tommy Lee Livestock; Yeti Cooler, Cory Wiese and Tom Pinter from Off The Beaten Path Photography.
We would also like to thank our sponsors and partners in Reno that play a very important part of the success that ACTRA enjoys. First, Meg Kennedy and Myra Estrella from The Row, Circus Circus and the Silver Legacy, who make sure we have a place to bed down, grab something to eat and try our luck. The staff at the Livestock Event Center does an awesome job making sure things are taken care of and ready to roll. Another behind the scene partner is the RSCVA, they do a fantastic job making sure the Reno community takes good care of us while we are there.
We have another partner that sometimes gets lost in the hustle and bustle of putting the Finals together and that is Ropers Sports News. Their job starts way before the Finals ever get started. They keep the information flowing about what’s going on with ACTRA monthly and also have the very important job of putting out the ACTRA National program.  The program gives all the information a member will need to qualify and attend their Chapter Finals and National Finals, they also make sure our sponsors get their due. We want to thank Steph, Jenny and the Big Guy, Bob Feist, for their help making ACTRA the success that it is.
Now let’s give those who serve on the frontlines a little love. How about Heidi Fettic, ACTRA National Secretary  and her very competent staff of Kelli Riley, Linnea Botello, Colleen Watson, Kiley Duby and Stephanie Duby. Great job ladies. What an outstanding announcing job that Katrina Pelroy did in the first arena averaging over 100 teams an hour including tractor work. Kat was assisted by Brenda Robbins. Penny Barker took care of the announcing in the second arena with an assist from Carrie Hayes. Then there was the voice of ACTRA, Jody Carper.  Jody steps in and takes care of the high teams. Before the high teams get started, he does a fantastic job getting the high teams roaring with the presentations of sponsor flags and a very special National Anthem. Lee Legasey has handled the presentation of Old Glory every morning and right before high teams, thanks Lee. This year we had two young ladies sing the National Anthem before the high teams. The first young lady is ACTRA member Logan Shewmaker. Logan sang just before the Super 7 high teams and made that moment just a little more special. The next night 6-year-old Callie Cardoza took the mic and wowed the crowd with her version of the National Anthem. ACTRA is so blessed to have young people like this involved in our Association
Jody also did a very moving tribute to Lifetime Members who passed away since last year’s National Finals  For those who were there when the riderless horses were brought into the arena representing Red St. Clair, Ron Selby, Charlie Inderbitzen and Don Campbell, they had to have lumps in their throats and tears on their cheeks.
Another change this year that got rave reviews was the Dummy Roping. Committee Chairman Mark Moreland got together with Josh Love and they decided to take the roping outside to the Heel-O-Matic practice zone. The weather was great and the kids and parents loved it. Super job, Mark and Josh
Now a tip of the Resistol to the guys who have the most thankless job, the flaggers Billy Butler, Buck Cardoza and Jared Thompson, great job guys. Another part of putting together a successful roping is the cattle. Tommy Lee and Steve Simons did an outstanding job having the right cattle for the right ropings. Thanks, cowboys, for all you do to make the ACTRA National Finals a big success.
Teena Blair and the Ladies in the Loop certainly did their job with daily silent auctions and raffles which play a very important job supporting the Catastrophe Fund.  Right across the aisle from the Loopy Ladies was the ACTRA Booth where you could pick up your “free” contestant jacket. This year’s jacket was designed by President Bob Blair and Professional’s Choice, Lorinda Markegard. Great job! You would also find Tonja Sweeney and Brian Blaswich in the ACTRA booth handing out jackets and selling the Super 7 Wrangler shirts, super job you two!
We would also like to thank our awesome vendors, many have been there for years and we had some great new vendors who we hope to see in the future.
Speaking of great and awesome, what about this year’s prizeline? Some new looks, new awards and overall fantastic prizes. I would like to give a shout out to the person who sets up all the awards, making sure everyone gets what they are supposed to. Big thank you to Shelly Winn.
The Catastrophe Fund dinner and auction was a huge success. The big ticket item of the night was a $7,500 gift certificate donated by the Kovac family. Thank you to them. Following the auction, the calcutta of the Super 7 teams were auctioned off. This was the biggest calcutta in recent memory, thanks to auctioneers Byron Gibbons and Dave Tyndall.
A big surprise at the banquet was a presentation of a Cactus saddle certificate to Bob Blair for all his years of service on the National Board and serving as National President the past four years – well deserved Bob.
With Bob stepping down, the Board elected Ty Rogers to the President’s position and JT Bradley to the Vice President position. These two guys are anxious to get started and have ideas that will take ACTRA to an even bigger and more exciting National Finals.
The webcast had a total of 5,500 individual views averaging 1 hour and 35 minutes per view or 340 days. We had almost every state check in and many countries all over the world.
With the 2018 Wrangler/Professional’s Choice ACTRA National Finals behind us, it’s time to start working on the 2019 Finals.

Results of the ACTRA National Finals ropings are as follows; payoffs are per roper.
