Mama’s Baked Beans

This month I didn’t have to look too far for a great recipe, I just asked the best cook I know. It comes from the woman who taught me what I know — my mom, Lynnette Krantz from Lodi, Calif. I remember her making this either for BBQ’s in the summer, or cold rainy days in the winter. So far it has a clean record, everyone goes back for seconds, sometimes even thirds and fourths! This is a must try and is one of my all time favorite recipes. I know you all will love it as much as I do!

— Ingredients

1 pound ground beef
6 pieces bacon
1 small onion, chopped
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup ketchup
1 cup barbecue sauce (preferred Bulls Eye BBQ sauce)
2 Tbsp. prepared mustard
1/4 cup molasses
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1 can (16 oz.) pork and beans, undrained
1 can (16 oz.) kidney beans, drained
1 can (16 oz.) butter beans, drained

Directions

In a large skillet, cook bacon, then in bacon grease cook beef and onion until meat is done and onion is tender. Drain any fat. Combine all remaining ingredients, as well as crumbled bacon bits (can put whole pieces of bacon on top if desired).

Place in a baking dish. Cover and bake at 350° for about 1 hour or until heated through. Yield: 9-12 servings.

I cooked up a batch of these beans to complement some smoked ribs we were serving to 10 of our friends. Everyone loved these beans and several people asked for the recipe. This was easy to make and best of all you can make it ahead of time and reheat it when you need it.

I used an extra 1/2 pound of beef and a little extra bacon.
Outstanding!
