In The Arena

Bob Feist

Timed Event
And Cowboy
Downhill Action

2012 is underway and there are some new names in the top 20 as well as veterans. The big money at Denver was won by a couple of young team ropers from Montana. Ty St. Goddard and Ryle Whitford both from Browning, Mont. claiming the average and placed in the rounds to each take home $10,793. You can bet that these two team ropers, who were raised on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in Browning, will continue on the rodeo trail for 2012 and hope for a spot at the Wrangler National Finals.

Twenty cowboys who will compete in this year’s Timed Event of the World presented by the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Okla. have been announced. The contestants will compete on 25 head of livestock over the three day period to see who will walk away with the coveted title. This year’s roster will include champions of the past including last year’s champion Kyle Lockett along with Trevor Brazile, Josh Peek, Daniel Green, K. C. Jones, Jimmie Cooper, as well as Chance Kelton, Steve Duhon and Chad Masters. Two new rookies will join the line-up this year including WNFR finalist qualifier Broc Cresta and two-time world champion Steer Wrestler, Dean Gorsuch. This is one of my favorite events of the year and I urge you to make your plans now for this one of a kind events that displays talent and horsemanship to the max.

This year’s Timed Event will add a pro-am team roping on Thur., Mar. 1, consisting of a list of amateur team ropers roping with the pros entered in the WTEC. They will take the first 20 headers who are a #4 or less and have a card to verify such number. They will also take 20 heelers who are a #5 or less. These ropers will get a chance to rope with the pros in a three head competition for a $250 entry fee. There will be a 100% payback with 60% to the am and 40% to the pro.

Speaking of timed events, timed eventers won both events at this year’s Cowboy Downhill held at Steamboat Springs Ski Resort, Steamboat Springs, Colo.
Dakota Eldridge, calf roper from Elko, Nev. won the Slalom Race. The Stampede event was won by steer wrestler Brent Knowles as he beat the pack down the hill in the free for all when all 54 cowboys go to the top and let’er rip. This was the 38th annual for the Cowboy Downhill and it is a must on everybody’s bucket list.
Check out the dates for next year and if you have never attended, trust me you will love it. It had snowed the night before and that sure helped as the mountain was wanting snow. A foot of new powder on the course made it just right.
