CHOWCHILLA, CA – The 7th Annual C-N Futurity held at the Chowchilla Fairgrounds is officially in the books. The stakes were high as 93 futurity colts came out on December 10-11 to try to win a chunk of that $54,100 that was added in the futurity and side pot incentives. $31,500 of that was raised by the 76 stallions in the stallion auction that took place Oct. 15 to Nov. 15. The C-N Stallion Incentive Program also pays $11,340 of this back to the winners of the qualified colts along with the stallions in the Incentive Program. This year, 35% of the colts running were qualified in this incentive.

Saturday’s futurity did not disappoint, with this go-round being one of the fastest in C-N Futurity history. Vicky Cook aboard Carmel Macciato knocked down a blazing 17.316 to take that first in the 1D spot winning $1,448. Lauren Crivier on IMA Six Zee Fame was close behind with a 17.517 collecting $1,086. Winning the 2D on Saturday was Jaimie Pearson on California Drift with a 18.317 wining $965.

On Sunday, the crowd was sitting on the edge of their seats as they watched and waited to see who would emerge victorious and take the 2016 C-N Futurity Championship title. Though 93 colts and jockeys did their best to outrun the Temecula cowgirl, only one could take first in the 1D average spot. Lauren Crivier and her great horse IMA Six Zee Fame posted a 17.866 to win the second go-round and secure the average win with a 35.382. Sheena Robbins and Heavenly took 2nd in the 1D in the second go with a 17.943. Cindy Lane and IMA Cash Bug on Fire took second in the 1D average with a 36.031.

Lauren lined her pockets with more than $6,400 between the Futurity and C-N Stallion Incentive.  The 2D average was won by Hayley Campbell and Texas Share of Fame with a 37.436. Kailee Hamre and JS Bet Red took 2nd in the 2d average with a 37.478.

First off, we would like to thank Nathan Ornellas and Darrell Smith for driving the tractor all weekend and ensuring that our colts had the best ground possible for their first big weekend.

Also, a huge thanks goes to Christy Ward and Maryann Smith for living in the office all weekend taking entries and handling paperwork.

Regardless of technical issues that kept plaguing us, Deven Warren was able to still pull off running the office effectively. It is very commendable how he was able to manage such a stressful situation with grace and still get the job done. Also, we thank Deven’s office help, Danny Speer.

This year, we welcomed a new announcer to the C-N team. Ted Dwyer did an amazing job announcing the race and we loved having him!

Deb Mann was present as the photographer at the C-N Futurity where she captured the great runs, the great horses, and the great memories that encompassed them. Jeff and Stacy Freitas were also there so that people would have an opportunity to purchase videos of their runs.

Thank you to Anthony and Robert Sheer for setting barrels all weekend, to Trina and Mark Stephens for jumping in wherever they were needed, Brett Ward for stamping futurity numbers, Juan and Tony for working the gate, Janel Flook and Pamela Sheer for helping in the stallion auction, and everyone else who helped out! We appreciate each and every one of you and the race would not have run as smoothly without you all!

C-N Futurity 2016 may have just ended, but we are already looking forward to 8th Annual C-N California Futurity in 2017! Dates are already posted at www.cbarnquarterhorses.com. If you have any questions regarding the futurity or getting your stallion in the auction and incentive program, visit with Charleen Ornellas, Contact information on the website above.

And since I was able to write the article this year, there is one more person who needs to be thanked who never gets named. A HUGE thank you to Charleen Ornellas. Everyone sees the well put-together product at the end, but not all of you get to witness the work that this woman puts in all year round to make sure that California has a top-notch futurity they can be proud of. So thank you Char, we are so appreciative for all that you do for this futurity- your efforts have not gone unnoticed.
