Sweetheart Race Pays Out $19,000-Plus

CERES, CALIF. – The Sweetheart Race took place at Diamond Bar Arena in Ceres over Valenitne’s Day weekend. It was a huge success, paying out more than $19,000 over the two-day barrel race.

On Saturday, Diane Williamson and GBA Impressive Command won the 1D with a 17.363 which ended up being the fast time of the weekend. We asked Diane about her run and she said that it felt effortless. She has had her gelding for 10 years, in 2014 she was the WCBRA Finals 1D Champion. She describes her gelding, Whiskey, as “the man.” Her future goals are to hit more out-of-state rodeos and rodeo more often. Cheri Graves and Too Smart To Shine won Sunday’s Open with a 17.449 and she was the 1D average champion!

We held a Futurity and Derby at this race, Charleen Ornellas and French My Frosty Tip won the Futurity average 1D and Bryan Scheer on She’s Simply Dashin won the Futurity Average 2D. The Futurity was sponsored by C-N Quarter Horses. The Derby was a success as well, and was sponsored by Equine Body Sports, Mr. and Mrs. Ward and Lyndee Stairs Ranch. The 1D on Saturday was won by Maile Morehart and She Got The Guy. Sunday’s Derby was won by Jamey Wells and Smokin Lady Yello.

We did some fun things at this race. We had a PeeWee race, which was for kids 8 and under, they all had a blast and won some yummy Valentine candy! We did a “Guess Your Time,” where contestants were asked to predict the time that they were going to run in Saturday’s Open. The person guessing their exact time or closest to it won a paid entry into Sunday’s race – Tracey Green won that contest! We also had a couple of candy jars filled up and everyone got to guess how many candies were in there; Amy Slye and Betty Grohl were the winners.

We had a fabulous time, Ashley Hofman and Stefani Hofman assisted me in the office and booth, Josi Appliing worked the gate and Shane Parson provided an awesome arena and ground crew. We are so very grateful to all the contestants who came out to compete and to Shane and Kim Parson for providing an awesome facility for our use!
