After watching the Texas Junior High and High School Rodeo finals this week, what a great opportunity for kids to compete against other kids and learn about the sport of rodeo. My kids have come up the ranks in both divisions and that experience is invaluable. There are many opportunities in rodeo now for these kids, especially the girls because of the popularity of Breakaway and how much it’s growing, with no real end in sight.

As I write this, I’m in Corpus Christi for the WCRA Rodeo. This is a great opportunity to possibly win some big paychecks. In the WCRA you can nominate an event, like a rodeo or jackpot on their app, and if the event isn’t listed you can request it by submitting a flyer.

By the time Hali was 15, she had won the USTRC Finals #11 twice and had been moved to a #6 header. This changed things and it was much harder for her to win. She asked me if I thought she could make a living with a rope, and I told her it could present opportunities for college scholarships where she could decide what she wanted to do for a living.

There are many opinions about how to conduct yourself before and after a run. The other night, my daughter missed a calf at the American Rodeo semi-finals for the opportunity to run a calf for $600,000. Her calf moved to the right as she threw, and she roped him around the eyes. She looked up, smiled, and waved, and rode out with her head held high. There was no jerking, no fit thrown, and no emotion shown. I was very proud of her and how she handled that failure on such a big stage.
