WICKENBURG, ARIZ. –The ever popular WSTR Title Fights Roping was held at Rancho Rio the weekend of February 11-13. Ropings were four head for $300/man and ropers could enter twice except the #8.5 where you could enter three times. The Open Roping was a five head. When it was all said and done, a record $1.3 million was paid out to the ropers.
Oregon’s Michael Baker and Oklahoma’s Brandon Gee met for the first time as they backed in the boxes on their first steer in the #9.5. Four steers later they were proud to call each other roping partners and friends. With a total time of 36.49 on four, Baker and Gee took home $36,100.
The Open Roping is always one to watch with the best in the business vying for the title. The eventual winners were Derrick Begay and Trey Yates. They roped their five steers in 36.96 to win $15,080.
